Something that I’ve been coming across more and more frequently is this idea of the Catholic Church as being either “not Christian” or anti-Christ. Search the internet and you’re bound to find legions of webpages dedicated to the topic. All of which are run by fake Christians, ignorant protestants, angry atheists, and more than a few Islamists.
One woman on Facebook recently told me to read the book of Daniel to see for myself that the Catholic Church is anti-Christ. I asked her for specifics, and she directed me to a anti-Catholic conspiratorial website that claimed to have deciphered the answers explaining the end of days prophesies using numerology… the ancient pagan practice of attributing divine meaning to numbers and coinciding events. Oh the “joys” of social media, the place where thoughtful conversations go to die.
Now I have issues with some of the Catholic Church’s practices and doctrine, but I wholly reject the idea of it being anything other than a Christian religion. That is not to say it has not in the past, does not currently, or will not in the future do wrong. It is, after all, a human organization, and therefore just as fallen and corrupt as any of us.
I think this is going to be a topic I’ll be coming back to time and again.
